You Asked, I Answered.

1. How did you stay motivated in nursing school? I failed a class, have to repeat it in the fall, and I’m kind of sad.

When my mom speaks about me as a little girl, she says I’ve always had very strong opinions, always had something to say, and that I was very competitive and always wanted to win. So, 1) I think it was that– I wanted to win. I decided that no class or no one instructor was going to beat me. I have this part of my personality where once I commit to something, I become completely enthralled with seeing it through. I really really like accomplishing things, lol. And 2) Just remembering why I started and remembering why I wanted to become a nurse in the first place.

2. What would you say is the most difficult part of being a NICU nurse?

I think adjusting to a baby being born not breathing or having difficulty breathing/low heart rate, etc. and being comfortable with knowing exactly what to do during the resuscitation.

3. How did you get your hair like this?

Tutorial is here!

4. Do you think 30 is too old to switch to a career in nursing?

Nope! I talked about this before on my Instagram, check it out.

5. How long did it take you to build your social media platform?

I think I opened up my page and made it public in 2016. Before that, I did not allow anyone to follow me unless I knew them personally.  That was fear keeping me small. I knew I had something to say to the world, I prayed on it, and I went for it. So I guess you can say it’s been growing for about three years now. I still don’t share everything– I don’t believe in sharing major life changes or the intimate moments of my life or details that are close to my heart, so I don’t. I don’t believe in posting regularly in real time or any upcoming travel plans whatsoever (I’m not into the whole “wheels up/wheels down” posts).  I was working from home for a year and a half before I shared that on social media, lol. We can talk about nursing, cool, we can talk about hair, cool, but simply put, some things just aren’t people’s business! Everyone has their style and oversharing is just not mine. Use social media wisely.

6. Tips on getting into nursing school?

I would say keeping your GPA and chemistry grades as high as possible. Obviously admissions offices are more likely to accept you if you have a high GPA, but also, if applying for a graduate nursing program, a high GPA may allow you to skip the GRE (which is what I was able to do)!

7. What are some of your hobbies?

Uhhh I’ll give you 3: BRUNCH, wearing tight dresses, watching slasher movies.

8. What are some lessons you’ve learned while becoming a social media figure?

  • I think all people, whether you have 2 followers or 2 million, should take weeks away from social media (Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook). I do social media fasts once a month and I’m due for one as we speak.
  • Cherokee Uniforms has connected me to some dope people via social media. I met my nurse mentor thanks to Cherokee’s Instagram.
  • Want to know the funny thing I’ve learned? It’s the people who never or rarely post who spend a CONSIDERABLE amount of time on social media and then they pretend that they don’t. They couldn’t do a social media fast to save their lives! What is that about?!
  • Sometimes the people who know you in real life will be the most jealous.
  • What I hope that y’all know: No one is perfect, no one is happy every day, and everyone has been through a really messed up situation.  Take social media with a grain of salt.

9. Thoughts on “When They See Us?”

My spirit isn’t ready yet.

10. Thank you for all of the compliments on my shape, lol, yall are crazy. That’s my mom and God. BUT if you want to lose some weight, do WeightWatchers. I do it to lose 10-12 lbs (currently working on that now) and it works! My favorite exercises (that I need to do more often) are spin class and, newly, running around Chicago with my friends!

And now I have to go get on the treadmill. *cries silent tears*

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions!!

So I’m leaving a comment for the competition cause I want the scrubs lol well not only that. I want to thank you for sharing your journey and inspiring me to find my passion again. I feel like sometimes life beats you down and you get discouraged. You lose sight of your purpose and passion. You and a close friend of mine have inspired me to become a doula and baby nurse. Nurturing children has always been my gift and passion. 2020 I’ve decided to take it to the next level and actually study and get the credentials I need to pursue my career. Seeing your post and reading some of your experiences has helped me discover what direction I want to go into. For so long I just lived to get by going from job to job and the only goal I had was to save up so I could get the hell out of there. It’s been very draining not living in purpose and doing what you truly love. I thank you for sharing you journey and being a light in this world. You don’t know how much of an impact you make on people who see your post and pictures. Social media has become so powerful negatively and positively. Thank you for being a positive light and inspiring me! Also I love Aquarian’s so you gotta send the scrubs now lol

    Sending you love and light
