Life As A Family Nurse Practitioner

Eze

Julia Eze, MSN, RN, FNP-C

Specialty:  Family Nurse Practitioner currently working in the specialty of Functional Medicine

The 618 Series is a series of interviews with Registered Nurses designed to give you an inside, uncensored look into real nurse life.

Julia, what are the 6 most interesting things about your specialty?
  1. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, a big role as a provider is to promote health and prevent disease which can apply to any specialty.
  2. I currently work in the field of Functional Medicine, which aims to treat the underlying cause of disease as opposed to managing and treating symptoms.
  3. Functional Medicine incorporates a lot of natural and self-healing methods for health and pain management.
  4. Stem cells (amniocells) still aren’t FDA approved in the U.S., but are available and used anecdotally, especially for joint pain and in sports medicine.
  5. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been found to be beneficial for soft tissue injury, joint pain, wound care, hair restoration etc., to name a few, and has become a very popular self-healing option.
  6. Generally people associate joint pain with older age (arthritis); however, joint pain can happen to anyone who is over-using their joints and causing wear and tear, which is often times younger adults in their prime (athletes, runners, gymnast, etc.).
What is the number 1 thing you wish you had been told as a nursing student?

Initially I stuck to myself and didn’t really interact with fellow students in the program but I learned very quickly the “power of the pack” and found it very beneficial to participate in study groups and have people to help hold you accountable (and remember) all the many assignments and deadlines.

Lastly, if you had 8 minutes to speak to the entire world on one issue in healthcare, what would you speak about?

I would talk about health promotion and disease prevention- majority of the ailments people face world wide are chronic conditions which are preventable.
